How to Become a RevOps Engineer
A RevOps engineer is the technical branch of revenue operations: they build and maintain the integrations, data pipelines, and automation that keep the revenue system consistent. Where a RevOps manager decides what the system should do, the engineer builds and operates it — and the fastest route in is SQL, then one CRM's architecture, then integration work.

What a RevOps engineer does
A RevOps engineer owns the technical layer beneath the revenue system: the integrations between the CRM and everything else, the data pipelines that move records between systems, the automation that enforces process, and the monitoring that catches all of it failing.
The distinction from a RevOps manager is decision versus construction. A manager decides that lifecycle stage should be set by objective conditions rather than manually. The engineer builds the automation that does it, handles the edge cases, and makes sure someone finds out when it breaks at 2am on a Saturday.

The skills, in the order to learn them
- 01SQL — first, and non-negotiable
Joins, window functions, and CTEs. Everything else in the role becomes easier once you can interrogate the data directly instead of asking someone. Two focused months gets you to useful.
- 02One CRM's data model and automation engine
Not administration — architecture. Object relationships, automation execution order, governor limits, and the failure modes. Depth in one platform beats familiarity with three. Start from Salesforce architecture.
- 03APIs and integration patterns
Auth flows, pagination, rate limits, idempotency, retries, and webhooks versus polling. Most integration failures are error-handling failures, so this is where the craft actually lives.
- 04A scripting language
Python or JavaScript, to the level of writing a reliable job that transforms and moves data. You do not need software engineering depth; you need to write something that runs unattended for a year.
- 05Warehouse and transformation
How data lands, how models are built on top, and why the warehouse rather than a tool should be the durable store. dbt is the common vocabulary here.
- 06Observability
Job monitoring, alerting, and reconciliation checks. This is the skill that separates a RevOps engineer from someone who builds integrations — silent failure is the default failure mode of this entire category.
A realistic 12-month route in
Assuming you are starting from an adjacent role — RevOps analyst, marketing ops, sales ops, or a technical support seat.

What to build in your current job
Four projects that are almost always available, genuinely useful to your employer, and directly demonstrable in an interview:
- A reconciliation report. Compare record counts and key fields between two systems daily and alert on divergence. Cheap to build, and it will find a real problem within a fortnight.
- A monitored replacement for a manual export. Find the spreadsheet someone rebuilds every Monday and automate it properly, with alerting.
- A data quality job. Recurring dedupe and normalisation with a before/after count you can quote.
- A routing fix with an SLA alert. Highest visible business impact of the four, because leaked leads convert at zero.
What it pays
RevOps engineers sit above equivalent-level RevOps generalists, roughly in line with analytics engineers. US bands in 2026: $95K–$125K entering the role, $125K–$165K at mid level, and $165K–$210K senior. The premium over a non-technical RevOps track is around 15%, and it widens with warehouse and pipeline depth.

RevOps engineer or GTM engineer?
They are adjacent and increasingly confused in job postings. The practical difference is what you optimise for: a RevOps engineer optimises for the integrity of the system of record, a GTM engineer optimises for the volume and precision of qualified contact attempts.
Choose RevOps engineering if you find data correctness satisfying and want the work to compound quietly. Choose GTM engineering if you want your output measured in pipeline and enjoy commercial experimentation. The technical foundations overlap enough that moving between them later is straightforward.
